Just made the switch from a Traeger to a Pit Boss. Should have done it a long time ago

After eating several things cooked on a Pit Boss I got one

Just did the burn off today

Either one is fine. The higher end Traeger are probably the best but they are pricey

Mine took 3 years to catch fire. My neighbor about three weeks and is having problems getting support to do anything. Both were Pitboss

If I get another pellet grill it will be a short auger design like Yoder

Why are the catching on fire?

This is the one I use. Was a fathers day gift.

Pit Boss

I clean it thoroughly after every 2nd use.

I have a Pit Boss, 3 years old and I’ve cooked on it A LOT. Keep the ashes cleaned out and you’ll never have a problem. It’s the best bang for your buck.

Why are the catching on fire?

The auger jams while cooking and start it back up and it dumps too many pellets. Then the fire gets to the auger port and starts burning inside the auger

I’m assuming moisture is the issue although I kept mine covered. My neighbors kept shutting down and he’d restart and the same thing would happen. He only got one cook on his.

There’s several post about this happening

The Yoder and similar design the auger is further away for the fire pot. Odds are unlikely the fire pot will have a big enough flame to light the auger.

I used the entire fire extinguisher contents to get mine out

I've had a Pit Boss Austin XL from Wally World for 3+ years and it has been great. As stated above, keep it clean and it won't catch fire (at least mine never has). I have a clean up routine I do after each use which involves dawn/water in a rubbermaid tub large enough to put the parts that grease drips on in and give them a scrib with a green scotchbrite. after that the grill itself is plenty cool enough to shop vac the ashes out. It probably isn't necessary to clean it this much after each use but I really don't want to attract bugs since I store the smoker in my basement. The grill keeps a very consistent temperature if you don't keep opening the lid.

I think that’s the key

Use it often or empty the pellets completely
