Yes, the Bessemer mouns were excavated in the 1930's. The artifacts are housed at UA and are in good order. I have done a good bit of research which involves that mound complex. Back in the 1930's there were no laws protecting mounds or other archaeological sites. The mounds were excavated as part of the WPA projects to help alleviate the poverty of the Great Depression along with the construction of the railroad that goes through there now. The same thing happened with numerous sites along the Tenn River during the construction of what we now call TVA.

I believe there is some bridge work near the Whitesburg bridge over the Tennessee River that was momentarily delayed for excavation work last year or in 2020. They were given something like 4 or 6 weeks to dig whatever they could find and then it was back to bridge work.

Whitesburg bridge has or rather had a very large site on the North bank. It has undergone many excavations over the last 10 or so years to make way for the new bridge. UA has been handling that excavation.

Dont know anything about the mounds but its amazing that back in the depression, through the WPA, the Government paid people to do actual work, now we pay people to sit on their ass and do nothing. If you tried to recreate the WPA today, it would be racist.

I'd be afraid of the buildings, bridges and dams that would be constructed in a today-world CCC program.
Bubba would be standing there on his phone picking his ass instead of putting bolts in a girder. Shantese wouldn't lay a cabin foundation corner because the rock is too heavy.
They'd all want breaks, free room and meals, days off, insurance and the pay wouldn't be good enough. Then they'd go on strike because they'd have to work outdoors. And then a dam would break or building would collapse.
At least the CCC from 90 years ago built stuff that has lasted, even though it's now time for new stuff.

Same thing happened on Neely Henry when APCO was getting ready to dam it up. they dug like hell and oh at the stuff they did find. There is a bunch of people in their graves now that could tell you all of the thing that came out of this river. Desoto artifacts, cannons, graves by the hundreds. To mine the pea gravel and sand they used to just push up the top soil in piles. All of the pottery, jade beads and other artifacts we basically not valued then. Unless it was gold.
