Anyone familiar with one of these in Jefferson Co? What might a child go to one of these for? I'm unfamiliar with the term.

It’s where they send your kid first for behavioral problems. After that they send you to juvenile detention. Honestly it seems these places pump your kid with psycho meds and they come back worse.

Hmmm. So if a kid was leaving one and DID NOT have prescriptions, would you think he is just generally defiant?

Maybe I just come off wrong I’m only speaking from experience with one of my children. It’s usually the courts that send kids to these places. This was in enterprise. I think a parent has more power if they have custody which I did not . Just don’t be surprised if they want to tell your kid they have adhd or some other issue that requires drugs. Maybe the kid needs it but mine was definitely not hisself at times when I visited and not in a good way. We had some pretty heated discussions but his mother was fine with it. Course she loves drugs so there’s that. Just pay attention is all I can say.

Back several years ago my wife and I did foster care and for the first eight years we took in kids that were labeled as therapeutic, most of them teenagers. It's mostly kids with serious behavioral or developmental problems and would be seeing counselors on a regular basis also. Every now and then one of the kids would shuffle from home to home until they could find a family that they seemed to halfway click with. Sometimes it was simply a personality thing or something cultural. Unfortunately sometimes there seemed to be no fit locally or noone available and when that happened they would send them to a group home or therapeutic group home. In most cases foster parents only took one therapeutic kid at a time unless they had siblings but the group homes had paid staff 24/7 trained to work with them and had several kids for each staffer. More like a hospital scenario than a home lifestyle. If you're a foster parent one day you're crying your eyes out, the next angry at the world and the next elated. I would imagine that part is the same in a group home.
It's an emotional rollercoaster that you have to live to understand.

We're foster parents and the little fella we are taking in tonight is headed south from one of these types of homes. It is our understanding that he does not take daily meds, so just trying to get an idea of what we is on the way.

Y'all say a prayer that the young man sees our home as a loving & safe place, and us as friends, not foes.

Sgiles is correct about them wanting to pump them full of adhd meds and even stuff like seroquel. We took a couple of kids that came from these homes and the first order of business after settling in and seeing to their immediate needs was to demand a new assessment of their needs and form a fresh treatment plan.

I'm glad he's not on meds and I surely will do some praying for the little man and for your family hippiekiller. I know you can't tell much due to hippa law so I'll not ask, but God himself knows so he knows who and what the prayers are for.

Sometimes its a great fit and all that the kid needs is to experience what a loving family is. It can be more complicated though. If you ever feel like you need someone to talk to, myself and my wife would be glad to talk to you and/or your wife. She worked more with DHR and appointments and stuff while I worked more at making a living. I'll pm you my ph.#
