Heard a bobwhite this morning. Brings back a lot of memories when I was young and had bird dogs.

Got several coveys on a couple different leases. See them pretty regular. One place was managed for them in years past the other just got lucky and grew some locals.

What you do today, you have to sleep with tonight.

I hear and flush Coveys often on our place. Love to know they’re around.

What happened to them? I know when I was a kid, they were everywhere. What we didn't see a lot of were birds of prey. Now, birds of prey are everywhere and quail are rare. Hmmmm......

Heard a bunch of them a few days ago listening for turkeys.

It was nice hearing them.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

I hunt on a place that is intensely managed for quail and birds are released every year. I still see one, big covey of wild birds once or twice a year in the same general area. We also have a lot of big, fat, and happy hawks.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Ever time we tried to let one of our Bantam hens hatch out if we didn't find the nest first the ants would kill the chicks in the egg as soon as it pop that risrt hole trying to get out

And Bantam chicken just damn sure wont raise in a pin. They got to free range . Also so there be two or three hens lay and try to set the same eggs . Damned chicken we ever had

Herbicide. Quail basically need grass and trashy woody areas to survive, and as we got better with timber management, keeping it clean, extensive site prep, and got away from fire and mechanical clearing they quickly lost any suitable habitat. It explains why it's been a statewide issue because timber is treated the same all over. And they are such a localized bird that can't just pick up and fly when you knock out hundreds or thousands of acres of habitat via cutting and spraying they have zero chance of recovery. Doesn't take much of that over and over again to wipe out a species.
