I’ve only ever killed one and it was because there was a turkey gobbling over a rise, a red head popped up and got shot. Turned out to be a jake. I’d never shoot one on purpose and I’d never let someone who was hunting with me shoot one unless it was a kids first bird.
Only Jake I’ve ever killed happened the exact same way. Gobbling strong in the back corner of some plantation pines and I sat down to try and call him over the hill. Hit the call and about a minute later a red head popped up and looked over and I smashed him. About 8 other Jake’s flew off. I’d never shoot one on purpose.

That's like posting an al.com article  to be COMPLETELY honest - i had no idea it was him - my apologies - goes to show you how much i follow the dbag - was simply illustrating how "bang bang" turkey hunting can be, and that sometimes you cannot fully "field judge" a bird - that one didn't fan & had a small beard - BUT had a full rolling gobble my point is - there are obvious TRUE jakes (tiny birds, tiny beard, incomplete fan, no gobble) and there are "gobblers" ... anybody on here that's been hunting any length of time has probably been fooled by a "gobbler" that turned out to be a jake instead ...
