Contrary to some of the replies everyone does not know where the black belt soils are located in the state. Maybe someone new to the state or someone that is just not informed as well as some other people. Just because someone says there club is in the black belt doesn't make it so. People post club info all the time and say they are located in the black belt and when they are not so I would say those people are misinformed as well and my need to look at the map. I think all he was doing was trying to keep someone from joining a club that is suppose to be in the black belt when in fact is is not.

As Clem pointed out, those lines "move about" depending on which map you are looking at. I have seen maps showing the southern border of the BB land a good bit further south when you over lay the refferenced map over some others. There is quite a bit of "red soil" in that area on the map Polywaug posted where the BB soil comes up to the river at Camden.

You are 100% correct. Most clubs anywhere within 50 miles of prarie dirt claims to be in the blackbelt. Especially if there is gumbo in their county. I do wish you'd use caps as needed and not use exclamation points ending most or all sentences. It makes for easier reading.

I wish I could find the map I saw of the similar soil. It was a crescent starting at about Reelfoot Lake and going south along the river into NW Mississippi along the Tombigbee to about Lowndes or Noxubee counties and then swinging east into the Bama Black Belt.

I guess the people that drew the map know better than me, but I always thought the moutains in Western Jackson and Eastern Madison are actually the Cumberland Plateau.
They must know better than the USGS too because every map I've ever seen has listed the main backbone of mountains here as the Cumberland Plateau.......The Appalachains peter out into North Georgia

I thought this was a good post, and as someone else mentioned, contrary to what some of you think, A LOT of hunters in Alabama will tell you they hunt in a club located in the BB when in reality they are usually just hunting in a club in a county with BB soil, but their club is actually 10, 20, 50 miles away which can make a tremendous amount of difference. I bet 8 out of 10 hunters think just cause they hunt in Wilcox or Dallas Co. that they hunt in the BB. Well, maybe so or maybe not. I've seen the same map before and I'm sure they aren't all exactly the same, but this map seems to be pretty close to other's I've seen.
But, I do agree that the Jackson Co. area seems to be a little different from what I've seen in the past.

There is some "bottom" land around Camden that have the clayey type prairie soils. But usually Black Belt soil has that layer of "chalk" or "marl" beneath a thin layer of topsoil. Have seen none of that in or immediately around Camden. All soils within the Black Belt regions aren't the calcareous clay soils. There are some red clay, sandy and sandy loam soils interspersed throughout.

Looks like the Dallas Cty club I'm in is located right in the heart of the Flood Plains. BB dirt is on both sides of us but we definetly don't have any BB dirt on our lease that I know of.

Didnt try to come across like i was yelling. Just trying to clear some stuff up. Camden itself isnt in the BB just north starting in canton bend and north is were you get into it. Also east of town along the river and towards portland and south along pine berran you will also find the BB you can actually see it on the map. But town and south and due west is out of it. Wilcox county, Gastonburg,Millers Ferry.Canton Bend,Gees Bend,Alberta,Portland,Catherine, and along Pine Berran from the Roland Cooper SP through Shawnee all the way to snow hill, just along the creek. Our family land is about 3 miles south of Portland Landing and the SP on Pine Berran and we have abut 300ac that the nrcs classified as being the right kind of soil and the other 300 being out of it. The map shows that all of the property is in it but we looked into the Wetland Reserve Program and they came out and took soil samples and ect. That is where im getting most of my info from. I actually helped with most of the WRP's in Wilcox and Marengo counties.

But, I do agree that the Jackson Co. area seems to be a little different from what I've seen in the past. In Jackson and east Madison the Tenn. River valley has some good soil in the valley. PRV is a smaller version as well. In west Madison, Limestone and westward you get into red cotton land. That map may call it all the same ,but it's not.

Not saying there aren't any really big deer farther south, but on average body weights and antler score go down a good bit.
