My wife is into the distressed look. We bought a large, very intricate mirror - used. The wife unit spent 2 days painting it white, then a brighter white on top of the first white. For the past hour she has been using sand paper to removed the paint in places so that it has the proper "distressed" look. I dare not offer to help because (1) I will do it wrong & (2) I have zero desire.

I am not sure what my grandmother would have said, but I am 100% sure that she would have been confused by these actions.

We've done some very expensive Cabinet jobs in the past, and that's exactly what the customer wanted. One lady wanted the distressed look including beetle holes etc 😄

Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

The Distressed look is so 20yrs ago but I guess it’s like women’s clothing fashion. If you’re around long enough it rolls back around.

I had to google it. Everything we had back in the 60s had that "Distressed Look".

I know someone who built a VERY expensive 8000 SF house in the Birmingham area several years ago. They had solid mahogany doors throughout the interior of the house. When the painter was done staining and finishing them, the owners went through the house with chains and beat all of the doors with the chains for a distressed look.

Friggin nuts.

The distressed look is ok in small quantities but a little goes a long way.

Same thing kind of applies to young folks clothes. My granddaughters buy blue jeans that my Mama would have ironed patches all over before she let me wear them.

. Iron on patches, now that was a distressed look.

We have a propane fireplace. Two years ago the regulator went out and the white mantle got covered in black soot. The Boss took a Magic Eraser to the mantle and gave it a distressed look as the soot never came off 100%. My answer was, "I like it.", because any other answer would mean I would have had to repaint the mantle.

The distressed look has an actual function........... You don't notice all the dents and dings your kids put in stuff. After raising 4 kids with the last 3 being boys most of my stuff has the distressed look, floors, doors. sheetrock, appliances...... rofl

I actually do this as a side hobby/hustle. I love to find stuff in the antique/junk stores and redo it into distressed farmhouse style. I turn a pretty good profit, too!

I worked at a millwork during college. Nothing like beating the hell out of a $10,000 front door unit and selling it for $12,000. They look good but it just seemed wrong to do that to a brand new door of that amount
