Where are you located and how big is your son? Ive for a Marlin Stainless XS7S .243, id let go of really cheap.

If He has been Schooled to Shoot a Couple thousand Rounds with a .22 Rimfire and Hit a Squirrels Head...... ..243 Winchester with Hornady Ammo.....is DEADLY.....

He is already shooting a 7mm-08, either replace the stock with an adult stock, or just buy a new 7mm-08. I have several custom built gun's, but hunt with a Ruger American Predator in 308 win. It's a tack driver with 165 gmx ammo.
That Ruger American .308 is a tack driver, wife bought me one several years ago

Im 44yrs old,5'10" and 200lb. I hunt with a youth rifle a good bit. same. either a Rem model 7 or Winchester xpr 20” both in 7-08. the short lop doesn’t bother me

I'd look at a Savage Axis in 350 Legend. Way more knockdown power and still minimal recoil. You can pick one up for under $400
