If its a 257 Weatherby it's not the original barrel. No such thing as a 257 Win Mag. It's either an original 257 Roberts or a rifle that has been modified for a 257 Weatherby.
If it says 257 Roberts and 257 Weatherby on the barrel, I would not buy it. That would likely mean that someone rechambered a 257 Roberts barrel to 257 Weatherby. This would require modifications to the bolt face and receiver which destroys the value of a pre 64 M70.

.257 Roberts was one of the original chamberings. Yea, you need to determine if the gun is original. If not it's not worthless as a shooter... If all original and in good condition it would be a collector.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

You sure it’s not a 264 win mag? 264 Winchester magnum was introduced in 1957 or 1958. If it's really a 1952 M70 it predates that cartridge by a few years.

Since the op couldn’t remember the chambering, I didn’t really put much stock in the gun being a 1952 model and 264 win mag just seemed to fit better.

That's a shame, Pre-64 Model 70's in 257 Roberts are hard to find and someone ruined it by rechambering to 257 Mag. It's not worth $1299, maybe half that. I'd leave it since I doubt you'd be able to shoot it first before you buy.

It's not worth half the price they're asking for it. To modify a 257 Bob to 257 Roy, the bolt face would have too be milled for a larger case head or the bolt was swapped with a magnum bolt, which means the serial numbers don't match. Either if these will devalue the gun. Also may have feeding issues unless a gunsmith modified the feed rails and follower, which also devalues the gun. I wouldn't give $400 for that gun.

Not only is that dumb as shit its dangerous to leave 2 different chamberings listed on the barrel. I'd like to take a rubber hose to both the owner and the Smith that did that
Keep your booger hooker off the bang switch.
