Manage to take a solid mature 8 point yesterday morning. This one is special for a couple reasons. My best friend and I purchased our hunting lease last year, that we had been hunting for about 25 years. The prior landowner was going to clear cut the hardwoods off the property and that would have drastically changed the quality of hunting on the property so we bucked up and paid the man. He is in the timber business so it was basically market rate, which we didn't hesitate due to the quality of the property. So this buck is the first deer taken off the property since we purchased it; we were skunked last year. The other reason is even more personal. My dad passed away in April towards the end of turkey season. He was not a big time hunter, but did grow up hunting pheasants some with his dad and brother on the farm in Nebraska. He loved hearing my hunting stories chasing deer and turkeys. When he was in the hospital in extreme pain and on heavy morphine his last words to me, given in a daze, were "did you get one?" He passed away approx 10 hours later. I did not hunt the rest of turkey season. I have waited a little under 8 months to say "Yes, Dad I got one." RIP DLJ MD This post is a bit of therapy for me since its the first Christmas without him.
