I'm really liking my 2-10x42 Leupold VX5hd. I believe my next one will be a 1-6x24 Trijicon Accupoint for purely a mountain rifle. Most of my hunting is in the mountains with less than 150 yards of view. The 2-10 will easily cover deep woods and most field type situations. I have a 2.5x12.5x42 accupoint and am well pleased with its performance
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts,hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

VX3HD 2.5-8x36 is a no brainer on a woods rifle.... meaning a carbine, lever gun, Model 7, etc. I've got probably 5 total 2.5-8x Leupold Scopes on things like a Kimber Montana for example. Never felt under scoped in the woods with heavy duplex it's a great setup.
I've got a bunch of expensive scopes I don't hunt with any of them really. These are all good suggestions here... just depends on how compact you want the whole setup IMO. The trade off is going to be the Field of View vs a little more compact scope when you are talking roughly the same bottom end magnification

As much as I tried to like the 2.5-8x36, I just can't. Everything looks smaller and farther away (for lack of a better way to say it).I don't know if it's the FOV or something else. I've bought 3 and sold all 3. I like the 3.5-10 VX3 and also the 3-9 VX2. My favorite scope that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is the discontinued Zeiss Conquest.

Scope power is as much a personal choice as anything else, pick what you like and go with it. A 2-7x32 would work fine at 100 yards or less, and as far as field of view goes, all manufacturers list what the field of view is at 100 yards so it is easy to compare. My dad used 2x7 Leupold scopes on this guns when I was a kid a routinely shot deer at 2-300 yards sitting on the railroad tracks running through our club.

I know the standard is like a 3-9x40 for most situations. However, for those of you who shoot 90% of your deer under 100 yards, do you think a scope in the way of a 2-7x33 would give a wider field of view? What is everyone's opinions on the power of scopes that you use? I have always been curious about this and whether or not I need as much power as I have in my scope. Thanks Doug from Cameraland and I were having this same concert today as he was helping me sort through some scope options. I’m usually a 50mm guy, but I’m thinking about going to a 2-10x42mm meopta that they have. I’m holding off for right this second until I shoot the new rifle with what I have here at the house, but I believe he has me convinced to try the mentioned scope.

One of the best scopes ever made Reb. Have two of them mounted now.
I’d never have less than a 3x9x 50 on any deer rifle. Imo
Although a red dot scope is easier for a kid also imo.
