Just read this on WSFA. The blue alert issued yesterday was for a guy who wrestled away the gun and taser from a State Trooper and fled the scene. He was captured by law enforcement yesterday afternoon.

According to the report, the trooper pulled the guy over for a traffic violation. When he checked for warrants, the guy had an outstanding arrest warrant. When the trooper attempted to put the guy in custody, a fight ensued and the guy grabbed the trooper’s taser. The trooper pulled his gun to shoot and the gun malfunctioned. The guy then pinned the trooper on the ground and wrestled the gun from the trooper, pointed it at him and pulled the trigger. The gun malfunctioned again. The guy then fled the scene with the taser and the gun.

I can’t imagine having someone point your own gun at you and pull the trigger. Just wow.

Maybe he didn’t have a round in the chamber. (?)

They already make you carry so much stuff on you it is hard to find a place for one.

Has anyone heard what make the gun was? I suspect that M48scout may be on to something.

The article I read stated it was a Glock 9mm, I’d assume a 17.

I was trying to figure what could cause a malfunction and I thought either the gun had a safety engaged or there was not a round in the chamber. That doesn’t make sense because the trooper tried to shoot the suspect when he took the taser. Think he could have forgotten to chamber a round in the heat of the moment?

Either way, how does that trooper go back out on patrol after something like this? How could he ever pull somebody over and not think about how he almost got killed? How could his wife live with him going back on duty?

I know we have many current and former LEOs on here. My sincere thanks for what you do.

Most likely carrying a striker fired pistol without a round chambered. If that's correct, we'll never understand why a state trooper on hwy patrol would ever not have his weapon loaded and ready. IF it had been, we would hopefully be reading a different version of this story and hopefully not be paying this scums life in prison privileges from here on. There is a great lesson to be learned here for us all, check your equipment often. Prayers for the trooper and his family.

I don't think it was the guns fault... I could be wrong but I'm going with it based on info given

Wonder if there is body cam footage and if will be released. Seems like it could at least be used for training purposes.

Wonder if a FOIA would apply to that footage.

Some of y'all may remember the incident where a "malfunction", but I rather call it the Grace of God, saved one of our local deputies, Packy Dempsey's life. For those that aren't familiar with this, Packy was going to arrest a drug dealer and they got into a fight. The bad guy got his gun but in the tussle for it the slide was racked back just enough to cause a stovepipe. Bad guy kept pointing and pulling the trigger but nothing was happening. This gave Packy enough time to get his backup and fatally shoot the bad guy. This was in the early 90's. The whole incident was on video from a camera mounted on the vehicle dashboard, which Packy paid for and put in himself. After this the County started putting them in all their vehicles. The video is still out there and has been on a number of police shows if you can find it. It started showing up everywhere so I believe Packy got it copywrited to control access. BTW, there is no doubt that this saved his butt in the political climate in Selma at the time.

The alert bulletin said the bad guy was only 135 lbs. It's hard to imagine he got overpowered by a little guy but
maybe he stunned him by getting in the first punch?

I worked with a guy in Birmingham that carried a 92 beretta ( first sign of a problem) and never carried a round in the chamber, said he didn’t feel safe. Thought if need be he’d always have time to load and fire. Not everyone who wears a badge is mentally or physically equipped for the job.

A stovepipe to me is after a round has been fired it gets caught in the slide's breech face.

So there was a round fired in the tussle, or after the bad guy got the pistol which caused a "stove pipe"?

Probably no round in chamber and "short racked" the slide. I think this is a common problem when under stress. Could have been something else but this makes most sense.

I was told by the sheriff of Dallas county at the time that packys gun was a beretta 92 and had safety on and that dead bad guy couldn’t figure safety out. I watched the video at cotton Nichols house and that was bone chilling seeing that guy standing over packy like he was.
