When in my 20's, I worked for US Steel in Gary Indiana. Even working inside could be pretty cold when Winter howled outside. There was always a "wind" in this huge building due to railroad doors and lots of vents at the roof. You get used to it, and I would say the Guys were pretty tough as I remember it. This was literally right on the shore of Lake Michigan.
I will never forget the events of one night though. It was -20 with a 25 mph wind. The first few Guys who left the wash house headed for the parking lot turned back before making the 150 yard walk. Soon somebody retrieved a box of rags and they all started wrapping their faces and stuffing rags around their collars and in their pants. This was the 3-11 shift, so we were leaving around Midnight.
Many people had "Mill Cars" because airborne graphite would get inside, and trash a nice car or truck. Mine was a 1962 Chevy II Nova with a straight 6 with LOTS of miles. To that I added a GIANT Die Hard battery held in place with a bungee cord, and straight 5W oil.
Our Crew promised each other we would not leave, until everybody got their vehicle started. NONE of the newer nicer cars would turn over. My old junker fired right up, and a couple others too.. We got out the cables and ether, and managed to get everyone going. That night is etched in my memory like it was yesterday. That's the worst I have ever experienced. I don't think anyone could last very long in that without shelter.
Big time cold is coming up north I see, which brought this memory to me today. Hope you enjoyed it. Maybe someone else has a story.. ??

Did some environmental due diligence for some wind projects for a power company in northern MN and on the MI thumb over the course of a week in Feb about 8yrs ago. As cold as I’ve ever been and ever want to be again.

Hamburg NY which is just outside of Buffalo mid January of 1990. First time I ever witnessed a white out and roads closed due over 2’ of snow in a short period of time. And it was like that for a couple of days and I couldn’t get back South fast enough.

I slept in a snow shelter for 3 nights in Northern MN about 30 years ago. Daytime high temps were single digits. The snow shelter was actually pretty comfortable.

Great lakes naval training center boot camp graduation. That weekend we all had a three day leave. The temp got down to insanity level late Friday and word went out that the base would be shut down until further notice - no one on or off. Knowing what was coming and before I could be officially notified, I packed my bag in my BEQ, tossed it out the window, climbed down three stories on the outside building face and started hiking my way to the middle of the longest expanse of fence facing the outside world. Tossed my bag over and then climbed the fence. Concertina wire will make a mess out of yer clothes (use the upright). Walked another hundred yards or so to a pay phone and called a cab. In the time between when I left my BEQ and the cab showed (1 hour +/-), I had chilblains on both ears.
The Chicago, IL greater metropolitan area set a new world record for low temp on Sunday of that weekend. January 20, 1985. The wind chill was -78f.
I hate that place. A redneck boi from the caribbean is such a rare character to begin with - I was certain they were going to let me die but they pulled it out and I reached a whole new level of "I doubt you can kill me".
I was wearing navy issued underwear, long underwear, thin nylon socks (very important), two pairs of thick wool socks, dress blues which are solid thick heavy itchy scratchy stiff wool, a marine corps over blouse (made for watch standing on the decks of ships in the shittiest places in the world because Marines are that person), a long peacoat that reached my ankles in 1/2" of solid wool, an 8' long wool muffler, ear coverings that were 1/2 wool and a wool watch cap topped with a cotton hat.
Whoever is happy will make others happy too. Anne Frank

Living in Nebraska in the late 80’s. I don’t know the exact temperature but the wind chill was around -70. The only time I saw the schools close up there. They were afraid people would freeze to death, should they break down, before help would get to them.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

Fort Leonard Wood Mo . Winter of 69-70. Wind never stopped. Wooden WWII barracks. No insulation. Coal heat. I was 12B (Combat Engineer) training. All of it was outdoors. Don't think I got warm the entire time I was there. Took Vietnam training in 2' of snow. Went from there straight to Vietnam. Brutal cold to brutal heat. That was one hell of a senior high school trip. Went to basic at Fort Lost in the Woods. We were billeted in steel quonset huts with no heat. We left in October and it was cold as heck. I can’t imagine being there through the winter. Thank you for your service.

I’ve been to us steel plant in Gary. That whole place would be a nightmare to have to be at.

Slept in an 18 wheeler with no heat, -6 deg with 20+ mph winds made for a long night. My dads ole buddy told me about his truck breaking down in Wyoming during winter. Said a state trooper stopped to check on him. He said “I’m fine, I’ve got a big army sleeping bag. I’ll get it fixed in the morning.” Trooper laughed at him and said I’ll be back in an hour. He said in an hour he saw head lights and was never so happy to see a State Trooper. He took him to a motel.

My son got back from there just before Christmas and he said he was never going back to Missouri in the wintertime again lol!
