We have 10 acres, but we have Alabama Forever Wild land across the road and the only time we can see our nearest neighbor is in the winter. Down the mountain the nearest house is at least a half a mile away. Plus we have a lot of natural, isolated woodlands all around.

So I would say that it really depends on the location of the land.

We were going to go solar, and did have a small set-up early on. We also used rainwater collection, which is a viable alternative to a well if you have enough roof surfaces. Rainwater collection can be much cheaper than a well depending on location. Fortunately for us we got Fort Payne city water ran up here about a year before we finished the cabin and we took it.

If I was just going to build randomly out in the general area, I would want at least 40 acres (and a mule grin)
