buddy of mine bought a 44 Ruger many years ago. A lot of us laughed at his short range gun. We were hunting a heavily wood area of Wilcox Co man driving. Buddy was walking in down a very straight woods road and a big buck walked out 250-300 yards down the road. Four shots later he walked off. A 760 Carbine in 30/06 would of been a much better choice.

For a 250 yard shot that's accurate. A 44 mag carbine is about 100 yard gun. Which I have found it is difficult to shoot through woods or pine thicket much further than that. It has it's uses. Great handy in a tree and for tight cover AND great for tracking wounded deer if your buddy shoots a .243.

I have a Marlin leveraction in 35 Remington. Nice short rifle that handles well in a treestand. 200 grain bullet has plenty of thump at woods distances too.

45-70 wouldn't be a bad choice either. Despite it's reputation as a bad kicking round I find just the opposite to be true. Most of the factory loaded ammo is pretty mild.

The 444 kicks A LOT worse than the 45/70.

I have a Marlin 1894S in .44 Mag that flat out pole axes deer at that range. I shoot the leverlution rounds in the 225 gr. Love this gun. As a note, it will hold 9 in the magazine and 1 in chamber so I also will use it hog hunting.

Hundred yards or less, I just use a longbow or a spear. Y'all are way over thinking this. LOL

On a serious note, every rifle I hunt with is just as capable of killing them at 5 yards as it is at 400 yds. I might change out scopes but 270s, 06's, 08's, 7MM, 300 win, and 300 wsm will all kill them dead as a hammer from 0-400+ yds. I just laugh when people ask about a 100yd gun. Pretty much every gun in today's market is a 100 yd gun but not all are 200+ yard guns.

Yep.

For medium game - deer, goats, black bear, etc. in a bolt gun it's a 25-06 with light for caliber solid copper rounds running at max velocity. Doesn't kick much and knocks the living snot out of everything - kills deer just fine from 0-600 yards. In an ar platform it's 6.5 grendel with light for caliber solid copper bullets at max velocity (not really that fast due to platform/pressure constraints) that still has plenty of energy for deer at 350 yards.

I just like carrying different guns, whether hunting deer, turkeys, or wingshooting. No sense in having multiple rifles if you ain’t gonna hunt with em every once in a while

Lever Action .357. Case hardened Henry with side loading gate. Or a JM Marlin or .44 mag

This^^^^^^! 50 yards is same as 300-400 to me. No way I'd tote a pistol caliber, don't invite trouble.

MANY folks have multiple guns they like to actually get out and use....whether they’re purpose bought/built, grandpas old gun, or their first dirty 30 or slug slinger. Maybe they just like to use open sites on occasion or revolver hunt? It’s no different than choosing to bow hunt during gun season. MANY folks have places they hunt where carrying a 300 + yard setup is stupid as all get out. Some folks have enough judgement to make the proper choice. Most would logically respect their choice....but there’s always gonna be a few that are gonna insist they know which shoes you should walk in, better than you possibly can. There’s your sign.

Pretty much everywhere I hunt is 100yds or less. I usually have some variety of Marlin lever gun. Typically 45-70 or 30-30. Sometimes I switch it up and carry a Ruger in 7.62x39.

I don't have short or long range guns. All my "long" range stuff kills just fine up close.
