Short barrel 308. It's like a 30-30 but gooder

What Fred said - it gives u more options - but I would use the 270 - more options Than a short range gun only if u ever need it

45-70 with 325 grain Hornady ammo is devastating at any range

Marlin maybe trapper or compact lever in 45-70 or 30-30 with 16-17 inch barrels. I would even cut to 14, but extra $. Scope would be 1x or 2x-7x 32 or 3x9x40 for a little distance. Great tree climbing rifles if can strap it to the stand while you climb in the thick stuff. I use to have an old man stand and would put it over the back sometimes as I climbed if clear enough up tree. Lightweight, less bulk, perfect gun for the situation.

Ruger American 308 cut to 16.5"s and I've killed a pile of them under 100 yds with an A-Bolt 30-06. I've got a hankering for a TC Encore Katadin in 460 S&W for just this occasion too.

When you can have other guns and KNOW you have places and hunts where you can’t shoot past a given range, piss on the extra recoil, blast, and weight of over-gunning, just because. wink If you’re one gunning, wanting as much extra as you can get, or might need to stretch from a given stand, go nuts. I think ‘versatility’ is a different topic than being specific about a woods only gun.;)

Amen!

Excellent point. But slapping a deer plum off his feet, with a big slow bullet, is just gratifying.

I'd say something you can find ammo for...

444 Marlin with a 1.5-6x42 Schmidt Bender Klassic. It’s a thumper on both ends.

.44 Magnum Ruger Carbine. I also don't believe in short range guns, however I do believe in Treestand guns. That's one of the best I have ever used.

I recently traded into a stainless Ruger 77/44mag carbine for this intended purpose. Gonna strictly be a woods gun, meaning I’m hunting where most shots are more than likely 50 yards or less. I just can’t decide on weather to put a low power scope 1.5-5 range, red dot, or just use the irons. I agree with others if there is a chance for a longer shot even walking in, I’m toting my .280
