Who on here has actually seen a free range fallow deer in Alabama? If so, what year/county?
I had one show up on a game camera in Choctaw Co this month. It appears the state estimates their population at around 40 animals, but the one I have is young (spike) so there must be enough concentrated to breed at least occasionally.

Did not realize we had them. Must be escape artists.

Did not realize we had them. Must be escape artists. Some were turned loose in Bankhead in 1925, but by the 30's they figured they had all been killed off. Then, some more were turned loose/escaped around Miller's Ferry and the state estimates there were 200-300 or so by the early 60's in Wilcox, Dallas, & Marengo Co. Seems like I recall reading where Fred said they preferred the open fields and the road riders/night hunters worked them over pretty hard, hence the extremely low numbers today.

There’s more then 40 in chilton county alone I’d imagine. Several years ago there were 20 plus in one small area. Of course all escaped from high fences. Hell there’s been several elk gotten out
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

I used to hunt a farm in Morgan County near the interstate and got down one morning. As I was walking back to the truck I had a bull elk start bugling in the hardwood bottom I was just hunting. I absolutely thought I was going crazy. Found out about 3 weeks later that the elk had escaped a high fence somewhere around Cullman and worked its way along the interstate and even swam the river and was killed in Southern Limestone County. Probably 2010 timeframe. I remember that, I thought it actually came close to Athens

I killed two in Wilcox Co near Millers Ferry in the early 70's. They were "introduced" into that area in the 60's when old man Fred Hendersons fence got down. They were pretty rare by the early 90's because of competition with whitetails and illegal hunting.

I saw an albino doe in the woods very near Millers Ferry in about 1990. Childers' land.
Used to be a lifeguard, until that blue kid got me fired.

I never heard the part of the story where it actually got killed though.

I’ve seen quite a few near the river at Miller’s ferry on the Hendeson’s land. That's where I've seen many of them.

Several years ago there was a mule deer wandering around near union springs. I used to have some pictures, but I've lost them somewhere in the last couple of moves.
