My first knife was a 3 blade buck knife similar to a case. BUT I would suggest an Opinel #7 with a carbon blade. They’re super easy to sharpen, they stay sharp, they’re relatively inexpensive (highly likely it will get lost) and they have a locking collar which is safer than a case that doesn’t prevent it from folding on you. Safer for him. AND a lot of people customize the handle for personalization with carvings.
