Guy rents Mustang GT, takes out the seats, crams it full of fuel tanks and drives across the United States and annihilates the Cannonball record driving from The Red Ball garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel and Marina in Redondo Beach in 25 hours and 55 minutes. "The Mustang GT will not go any faster than 159 miles per hour," he told Road & Track. "Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying."https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cu...25-hours-55-minutes-in-a-rental-mustang/I guess law enforcement was busy with other things...

Averaged 108 MPH for a 2,800 mile trip, that's wild! Bet he was really rolling across the high plains!

Doin 140 in that 24th hour had to suck! I cannot imagine being able to focus well enough at 24hrs no sleep and being wired enough to be driving that fast.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

All I can think of I’d the line in Foxworthy’s 12 Days of Redneck Christmas:
“And some parts to a Mustang GT.”
“Killing tomorrow’s trophies today.”
On the distance I like to walk to my stands: “The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”

I can’t believe regular tires on a rental car can handle sustained high speed like that

I would liked to have seen the look on the rental clerk's face when the guy turned in a car in Kalifornistan that was rented in New York the day before.
Guy probably got put on a do not lease list. I once read that most writers for auto magazines are on such a list.

I think the article says he did it on less than $3,000. I imagine he rented it a couple days ahead to mount his tanks , get his radar jammer hooked up and such.

Wonder if it was a Hurst model.

No one buy a used silver/Grey mustang GT in the next few years.
I'm gonna bucket list the cannonball. Not to set a record, just to do it. I've got a buddy who will probably do it with me. The gas tanks seem like the easy part.

How much was that rental car bill!?!? I used to work on a Miata race team. This guy had built and raced cars his whole life. He ran the race team so he could afford to race. Basically what he did was build SPEC Miata race cars and crew them. He would have them all race ready and prepped and bring them to the tracks. Rich doctors would put down a $17,000 deposit for "their" car, fly in on the weekends and race all weekend, and then fly home. I think each race weekend cost them $3000. He would then pack up everything and take it back to his home base and make sure the cars were ready for the next race. Pretty cool gig. Anyway.... He said back in the day, in California where he was from, they used to have a racing class for stock Dodge Neon's. He said every weekend guys would go to Hertz or Enterprise or Avis, rent Dodge or Plymouth Neons, bolt in a roll cage, race all weekend and then on Sunday afternoon, take it all out and turn the rental cars back in on Monday. He said guys did that all the time.
