Not correct. Nixon appointed Ford as his Vice President when Agnew quit.

Article II, section 1, clause 6 of the constitution provides that in the event of a vacancy in the office of Vice President, the president appoints a new Vice President who is then confirmed by a majority vote of both houses of Congress.


When the vice president assumes the office of president he can then choose his own vice president who has to be approved by congress. VP does not automatically go to the speaker of the house.
