Sounds like a robbery in progress to me if it was running good and you haven't noticed anything. You are talking about the piston skirt slapping the cylinder wall. That means the cylinder wall clearance is excessive.

Do you think the rings would be sealing pretty good if that was the case? You might hear piston slap on a cold start but it should go away. But if there is a serious problem there is no way you would not have noticed it and burning oil, etc.
