He’s had a couple of bad wrecks like that I’d be hanging it up. If he was a cat he'd be running out of lives. He's been in some bad ones for sure

Amazing that his injuries are not life-threatening and they classify it as serious.
Just a testament to the safety measures, many of which were balked at by the old guard who yelled about "real racing! real men drivers!" back in the day. But the improved cages, seats, harnesses and Hans neck restraints have helped many drivers, not to mention other safety improvements on the cars.

Yep. Those cars and restraints are designed and built for this exact type of scenario. It's hard to imagine a wreck any worse than this one. The old guard mentality may have cost Earnhardt his life. Many have argued he would've survived with a HANS device

It's possible to not watch it or enjoy racing like we did years ago, but not want to see one of the drivers injured or killed. Two things can be true at the same time.

Many have argued he would've survived with a HANS device He supposedly had a loose belt because he didn't like being strapped in so tightly and also wore an old-school helmet with goggles. Slamming your head into the steering wheel in that situation isn't a good thing. Out of Earnhardt's tragic death, though, is perhaps his greatest legacy: the emphasis on more safety for the drivers, cars and the fact some - including Newman - probably are alive today because of it.

Good news that he is alive. Guess I can kid around now and say we never did have to worry about a broken neck. Only driver out there with no neck. His head sits right on his shoulders.
Hope he recovers 100% and does not have any eye injuries. Lot of sparks and shrapnel inside the cage.
Don't give up, don't ever give up!

LOL, he definitely doesn't have a neck.
Amazing how that fuel didn't catch on fire.

Seeing it on TV is one thing but if you've never been to Talladega and seen how fast those cars actually go, I don't think you can comprehend how bad that wreck was. Television really does an injustice to how fast a car going nearly 200 MPH is actually going. Truth. The "tv view" of Dale Sr.'s crash looked like a messy crash, but not a fatal one, he looked to still be doing about 100 immediately after the impact...but when you consider he was doing about 200 immediately before the impact, that's the same thing as an "all stop" crash at 100! I have never been a NASCAR fan, running in circles looks boring to me, but I hope there's good news for Ryan Newman and his family.
