Just a testament to the safety measures, many of which were balked at by the old guard who yelled about "real racing! real men drivers!" back in the day. But the improved cages, seats, harnesses and Hans neck restraints have helped many drivers, not to mention other safety improvements on the cars.

Yep. Those cars and restraints are designed and built for this exact type of scenario. It's hard to imagine a wreck any worse than this one. The old guard mentality may have cost Earnhardt his life. Many have argued he would've survived with a HANS device

He supposedly had a loose belt because he didn't like being strapped in so tightly and also wore an old-school helmet with goggles. Slamming your head into the steering wheel in that situation isn't a good thing.

Out of Earnhardt's tragic death, though, is perhaps his greatest legacy: the emphasis on more safety for the drivers, cars and the fact some - including Newman - probably are alive today because of it.
