So I’m having some shoulder pain. Hoping it’s not rotator cuff but might be. Question is, what kind of dr do I need to go see? Some place like Andrews Sports medicine?

Can you reach your back pocket? Can you lift up a gallon of milk from the fridge? Can you raise the arm over your head? If no, then it's a torn rotator cuff. If it hurts so dam bad it keeps you awake at night and you'd really think amputation would be better, then you know how I feel.

If it feels like sharp localized pain, its your shoulder. If it feels like burning pain all the way to your elbow and sometimes finger tips its your neck pinching a nerve. I got both the neck and torn labrums in both shoulders. Go see a sports medicine doctor, Andrews is good. If its simple enough you may just need some physical therapy and basic pain management.

I can do those things listed. However, the other day I moved real fast to catch something that was falling and about hit my knees. If I sleep on it, it will wake me up and I can hardly move it
My regular dr told me it was an impingement, but said that was all he could tell. Told me I would have to see someone else to see if anything is torn If you can do any of things I mentioned it's probably just an impingement or arthritis inflammation. Ibuprofen will help. My right shoulder was rebuilt in 2015, complete with titanium screws and some other synthetic parts. Now it's almost as bad as it was prior to the surgery. I've had a torn bicep and rotator cuff in left shoulder so long it's too late to fix most of it. The rotator can be repaired but the bicep tendon is history.

If it hurts so dam bad it keeps you awake at night and you'd really think amputation would be better, then you know how I feel. I can do all of those things, and found out Wednesday, after my MRI, that I have a full thickness rotator cuff tear, and a bone spur that has rubbed a hole in my rotator cuff in another spot in my right shoulder. The tear has been around for a couple years, but got progressively worse to the point I finally went to the dr. about it...the hole is more recent. I will try to schedule my surgery as soon as possible after I get home from work next time, March 24....My plan is to take 1 hitch off from work, which would give me 12 weeks to recuperate. While I can do all of those things, I certainly can't do them pain-free, but once my arm is raised over my head, that's about the only position that's even remotely comfortable. Both injuries to my rotator cuff are on the top side of my shoulder, so my right arm up removes all the tension on the injured areas.

Rub some dirt on it.
Seriously, go get it checked. Andrews clinic is as good as it gets.

Probably not the best place to listen to medical diagnostic techniques. Go see an ortho. Andrews is a great choice.

Go see an orthopedic doctor. However, I know a guy that hangs out around the Moe’s across the street from the UAB ER. He can hook you up!! You’ll lose the pain and in about 8-12 months your teeth will be gone too.

I disagree with the idea that it is automatically Rotator a torn Cuff if he can't lift his hand over his head. I had that problem and was sure it was my cuff but an MRI showed it was an impingement which the Ortho said is much more common. It is where bone is worn down and when you raise your arm or move it just the right way it pinches the muscle and causes great pain. The fix is surgery where they shave the bone so it doesn't pinch.
Bad news is that it is surgery and requires rehab. The good news is that the rehab and down time is not nearly as bad as a torn cuff. Still not fun though.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Maybe I should have been more specific. I can actually get my arm over my head, too. But it hurts like a #$&%*+=&$ to bring it down again. That's a clue it's a torn rotator cuff.

You need an MRI. If they suspect a SLAP tear, they need to do an arthrogram also to confirm.

That's a clue it's a torn rotator cuff. yep...on the way up and on the way down, it hurts like hell; but if I could just walk around all day once the arm is up, I'd be good! 'Huntress just had surgery on her shoulder 13 days ago, started PT this morning...I'm shooting for having mine in about 35 days.
