Yup.

Sales guy that calls on us is mid-50's and has a pair of black wingtips with white soles and blue shoestrings.

No, he ain't the ghey. His wife is a sweet lady.

I think too many older guys try to be trendy like their kids. Looks stupid when they do.

Yes they do. I only wear leather soled J&M so I can have them resoled.

For those that say J&M , I have had a pair for over 10 years that are leather soled and cost about $200 back then. They are fine if I'm not walking much but if I spend much time on my feet they are brutal. I'm used to my Ariat Ropers and Clarks loafers but a little time in the car business, a few years ago, taught me that few dress shoes will be comfortable enough to wear all day walking on pavement. Those Clark Tildens might be the ticket since I've never had a pair of Clark's that weren't comfortable but even my Clarks loafers didn't have enough sole to keep my feet from hurting after all day on the lot. I bought some Clark's with a more substantial sole and never had another issue but they wouldn't pass for dress shoes. If you are at a desk job there are probably several shoes that would work but if you're going to be walking all day a leather sole or thin soled shoe isn't going to cut it for most. Several good brands and suggestions but I would take into account how much I would be on my feet before purchasing a formal dress shoe. I've also had 2 pair of Cole Haans and they were as comfortable as my Clark's loafers but I wouldn't reccomend them for heavy walking, either. You might find a reasonable compromise with something in a vibram sole that still meets your needs for a dress shoe.

Wow Bill. Do you use shoe trees? I work in a 600K sqft factory. J&M leather soles are my shoe of choice when have to stand a lot or give factory tours to customers. Now, I have a pair of rubber soled J&M and they kill my knees. My most comfortable but dont look as nice, are ECCOs.

P.S., I have had 4 knee surgeries and a big guy 6' 250lbs so I am very picky about shoes.

I do use shoe trees. It's the standing and walking all day that make my feet ache like crazy. I do have flat feet though so that is probably a contributing factor. Thicker, softer soles definitely cured the comfort issue for me though.

I have to wear dress shoes everyday for work, I have had the same pair of Cole Haan's for 3 years and i wear them almost everyday. when they start showing wear, i bring them to a cobbler and have them reconditioned. i will continue to do so until it is no longer worth it.

My mother gave me a couple pairs of Mephisto shoes years ago, and they’ve held up well and comfortable as hell.
