Off topic but figured I'd ask. My 18 year old son will be starting college soon and we're checking out the different types of student loans. I know next to nothing about these. He has no scholorships or anything like that. I've checked out a 11.375% Sallie Mae loan but wondering if there's another plan with lower APR? Or is 11-12% about normal? Thank you in advance. - Jim

We did the parent plus loan. As long as he is full time you don't have to make a payment till 6 months after he graduates. But it's good to pay interest as you go

Holy hell. My student loans were 3.X-4.X%
I would suggest he do two years at a community college and then transfer to a 4year.

Student loan debt is financially strangling a lot of young adults.

This^^^

My youngest didn't go to college (Even though he had a partial scholarship.) and instead self studied and got a Network+ certification and then got a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and he just accepted a job for $63k a year. He's just 2 months into his 22nd birthday. Wrap your head around that.

11-12 % is about normal. It's a huge racket that is going to bite our country in the azz with young voters. Forgiving student loan debt sounds good to them and they don't care that it means you and I would ultimately pay them.

US Armed forces or 2 yr college. Way too many adults getting suckered in by their kids to go to their dream college just to flunk out or run up massive debt that most will never re-coop. 2yr nursing degree = $60-$100,00/yr

The best thing going right now to pay for college is the National Guard.

11-12% is a joke. Someone with no credit can buy a car with a lower rate than that right now.

Tell him to work his way through college. He would be better off taking 8 years to finish college while working full time than he would be taking out loans.

USAF, odds of an enlisted seeing combat slim. However, I think the shortest enlistment is four years compared to two year enlistments for the other big three. Have him check with the coast guard, that might be a fun ride and get a few benefits to boot. Student loans suck , especially to the ones on the hook.

If he majors in anything decent he should be able to pay it back pretty quickly. I’m sure accountants and engineers start off pretty good.
