7mm-08 is hard to beat because of the versatility. 2nd choice probably .25-06. Everything else that has been mentioned including 7x57 would all be good. Some are more difficult to find ammo for which might be a concern.
I would only add this:
Many are suggesting a .308. This has about 15-16lbs of recoil with a 150 grain.
That's no different than .270 shooting a 130 grain bullet which is right at about 16.5lbs of recoil.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
