I am in the process of fixing to start our house build and unfortunately have to remove 2 black walnut trees. I’ve noticed that gun blanks from black walnut bring decent money. Has anyone ever sold this type of wood or know anyone that may buy it? I have access to a sawmill I have several options for them but wanted to get thoughts from the experts.

Walnut is searched wood in some locations. The burl walnut from the base is even better.

Black walnut is a beautiful wood. If you can find someone with a portable sawmill and if you have a barn to dry it, it would be worth your while to have them cut it into blocks and dry it (it will take a long time, but it is worth it - if you are into woodworking). My grandpa made some of the most beautifully crafted pieces I have ever seen. He would store it on racks that were suspended over a wood stove in his shop. He used his bandsaw or table saw to cut the slabs to the thickness he wanted for boards.
One of these days, I will post some pictures of pieces he did for me, he was a heck of a craftsman and an even better man.

Do not let horses or cattle get near the sawdust. It's toxic to them.

You can do so much with this wood - everything from furniture, cabinetry, gun stock blanks, etc. It really just depends on what you want to do with it. Just remember to closely inspect it for nails and don't be inhaling any of the dust. As far as the drying - you can do it yourself or have a mill kiln dry it to speed up the process. I'd have to see a pic of the trees but your pretty burls, swirls and crotching will come from the base of the tree, where 2 main limbs join and that wood that is below the ground. I once knew a fellow that would intentionally target the root ball what's below the ground. He'd use a pressure washer to blow out and clean as much dirt as possible before milling. It's a lot of extra wook to do this but he produced some beautiful, figurative wood. Good luck!

I'm interested if you have any burls.

I have big kitchen island made from black walnut, its gorgeous. I had to buy the wood before we started building because it needed so much time to dry out. My cabinet guy let it sit for 10 months before building it, turned out better than I ever expected.
We are not perfect, only forgiven!!!

I had a boss that always told us to look for walnut trees when we was clearing land on his job sites 3yrs ago. He said the stumps were $ 5k a piece but he did a whole damn lot of talking. Out of thousands of trees...we never saw 1 walnut tree. He talked about walnut stumps that whole first week on the job telling us to watch for them. He said gun makers wanted them. Can’t be true. There’s lots of black walnut around. I know of properties that have a bunch. Timber cruisers don’t even value them differently than oak.
