Just guessing, but I bet Sheriff John knew the boy was trouble and reminded him that he knew by telling him to turn his music down, then the boy shot him, the boy then took off and ditched whatever illegal things were in his car, then called daddy and then turned himself to avoid the death penalty and get whatever leniency he can get.
