That looks correct.

wow. if you add up all of the benefits, base pay etc. they are 6 figure employees and technically work part time in comparison to other professions.

My point exactly. They have a better retirement than our military and federal government employees.

Pensions are going to destroy the country, no exaggeration. There are over $100 Trillion of unfunded promises. These promises can not be met.

And they deserve every penny. Only worse job would be IT help desk

Tier 2 retirement is pure garbage no matter what sector you’re in. Public safety tier 2 is pathetic.

I wouldn’t say teachers have a better retirement than our military. That insurance bill is sure knocking a dent in any benefits.

Military is eligible for the GI bill... teachers have to pay for their own degree.
There sure as heck isn't anything called "teacher housing" and no food provided for teachers outside of some sort of PTO event. Also, the Military gets (albeit crappy) VA, teacher's insurance ends with their service.

Apples and Oranges.

Alabama teachers pay into SS and in Georgia they do too. In Missouri, Illinois, kentucky for example they do not. This makes a big difference because of the amount of taxes paid over a career. Plus, the fact that the pension will limit the SS earnings (plus more taxes). If a teacher is smart they can invest that 7.5% in their 403b over the course of their career and really make a difference in states that don't force you to pay in.

Plus, teachers can build a little generational wealth if they are smart with the lump sum distributions and 403b investments. At one time I did some statewide training for Valic (for their annuities and 403b platforms) and they said the #1 job for spouses of CEO's was teachers. They believed it was to take advantage of the state and federal tax benefits allowed by non-profit retirement plans.

I'm just comparing retirement plan to retirement plan. I didn't mention any of that other stuff.

How will a pension limit their SS earnings?

I'm calling bulldoodoo on the federal government retirement not being better. About 10 years ago, I was offered a job with a federal department. The benefits were much better and the retirement was much better. The job I was offered, health insurance for family was included for free and you were fully vested in retirement after 10 years.

The chart is correct. The only thing that doesn't show is the cost of health coverage goes up substantially once you retire.

The Government Pension Offset allows the SSA to reduce what you get from Social Security in the form of spousal or survivor benefits if you also receive a pension payment from public-sector employment. Unlike the Windfall Elimination Provision, the Government Pension Offset is aimed at what you'd otherwise be entitled to receive from Social Security based on someone else's work record, rather than the retirement benefits you generate from your own work

there are some other rules. I have just had CPA's tell me it can be an issue. I am not old enough to check if it'll hurt me. They change the tax code too often.

the 457 is better in many ways to the 403b, but you guys can look it up if you are interested.

Im just talking about retirement only. What was the retirement they offered you? It should have been a pension of 1.1% (after 10 years) of your high 3 salary average and for the thrift savings plan should have given 1% of your annual salary deposited into your retirement account, and up to 5% matching.

I don't remember specifically. It wasn't a GS level job type. It was with the federal office of public defenders.

Most people have to work well past 62 before they retire.
