My dad ALWAYS cut their throat - which I never understood, especially since we had always field dressed them on the spot. I think sometimes the things we do is based on learned behavior passed down vs. common sense. But back in the day when I hunted with my dad - running dogs and buckshot rarely led to a clean kill and on many occasions we’d walk up to a deer that wasn’t quite dead and we didn’t want to add more buckshot. He was good with the knife - he did’t slice cut, he’d stab them and draw the knife to cut the artery
