Dearest Mother —
We arrived at Fort Adams on the Mississippi yesterday and began a night march toward Baton Rouge at sundown. The oddest aroma hangs thick in the air and gets stronger as we approach the city. I can only describe it as a blend of sweet cornbread and sausage.
