If you hit him back, resist the urge to go after him until he has had a full 8 hours to die. 2, 4, or 6 hours is NOT enough on a gut shot deer with a bow. He won't go far at all until he lays down. Just be patient, slip out quietly in the opposite direction, and the odds are really good you won't need a tracking dog. Good luck!

Yep, you should wait. If you can see him, you might have to a tough time getting down and backing out for the rest of the day without bumping him into the next county. That is classic gut shot behavior. He will die but it will likely take all day. If you bump him, he will probably go a long way and leave very little if any sign to follow. Your best bet is to stay put but I know I couldn't sit that long. Good luck.

If you can still see him, don’t move till he’s for sure dead, then wait another hour to make him deader. If Tom Munoz is still tracking, he should be close to you. I’m not sure if bowtarist is tracking or not, but if you end up needing a dog, I can give you Tom or bowtarists phone numbers. PM me your cell number
