if you shoot at me and then turn and run, if yer still armed and I feel you are a threat I'm shooting yer ass front or back. That the offer part of it. If they can clearly articulate the perceived threat "they were still firing at me as he ran away" or "they were pointing their weapons at me" or " they were still armed as they were running away" then it might be judged as self defense. But dudes get shot at then haul tail unarmed and get shot in the back, it's going to be hard to claim self defense when the treat is no longer there and easy for the DA to say the shooter was longer longer the victim and was acting out of revenge.
