Nice bike. If you're 5'9" you probably need a 17" frame. That looks to be around 19".

Yep, it's a big bike. But it'll at least allow me to ride around the hood while I wait for a good deal to pop up on Facebook or Craigslist.

How does it feel too big? It's a real nice bike. You might try a shorter stem and change the way it feels..

Your height has nothing to do with the right size of a bike frame. Your inseam does. Your torso size is a mix of saddle placement and stem length. What is the size of your frame? What is your real inseam (not pant length)

I am going to try a shorter stem and see if that makes riding it a little more comfortable. When I stand on the ground straddling the bike frame, I can't put both feet completely flat on the ground. I almost can, but not quite. It's a large size frame.

Are you in the saddle or the top bar hitting your crotch? What feels "uncomfortable" Gomer?

If any of you want to know ANYTHING about mountain bikes, where to bike, how to bike, suspension vs non suspension, someone to ride along with you and ride you into the ground, what kind of nut butter to use, what color spandex shorts are proper for which day of the week, what areas from Alabama, Colorado, Nevada to NC to ride send me a PM. I'll hook you up with my brother. He's been riding over 10 years and is a wealth of knowledge. But he does look gay in his cycling clothes.... Everybody looks gay in their cycling clothes.

I've heard his spill so many times I feel like I'm a pretty accomplished mountain biker and I don't mountain bike.

If you have a short inseam vs "normal" people, you will be plauded with that situation. I am a short inseam (30" and 6'1") long torso guy have to buy a larger framed bike or I have such a long stem I feel like I can't turn fast enough. Seriously measure your inseam (back against the hall, book shoved in your crotch, measure from the top of the book to the floor).

You need to be able to stand over the frame, but not necessarily over the seat. You want a high seat going up hill and lower going down, which is why a dropper is handy. I can ride fine without one though. I would say you do need a smaller bike in that frame.

I would have thought however that the G2 Geometry of that bike would have allowed for you to stand unless you do have short legs. Make sure that you can't get down over the bar flat footed if you put the seat back as far as it will go. It will depend on how slanted the geometry is and how long your legs are and how far the seat is forward already. The shorter stem will help if you can move the seat back to help your dismount.

I found a 'used' Trek Marlin 7 at a Trek shop not too long ago that I have been riding. Got it for a decent price too. Supposedly it was sold and returned with less than 10 miles on it. Guy at the shop said that the first buyer returned it looking for a full suspension bike. I have enjoyed the heck out of it. It is amazing the difference you experience when you ride a well designed bike.

I haven't done any serious mountain biking in 20 years. My buddy and I back in the college days used to custom build bikes on various frames then go destroy ourselves on the trails and downhills in Ga, TN, NC and AR. Short inseam and long torso here too...always a challenge to get good fit and balance.

I'm a 32" inseam and 6'1 and 180 lbs. My 2017 Marlin 5 19.5 fits me better than any I have tried yet. I don't do a lot of wild stuff, mostly ride old dirt roads and forest roads. I like to ride 8-15 miles about 3-4 times a week.

RH Clark has a good idea. Here are my sizes on my last bikes. 30" inseam 6'1" 250 pounds. Was 220 when I rode a lot. Important to note, the sizing is all over the place due to brand and type of riding

MTB
Specialized Sworks Hardtail - 17.5"
Giant NRS - 19"
Giant Trance - Large
Nishiki Colorado (making a fat tire bike - no suspension) - 20"

Road
Giant TCR - Large
Kestrel Talon - 56cm

So like I mentioned before, my buddy loaned me a bike indefinitely, and it was awesome but just too big for me - a large frame 29er. I ended up buying one of the ones R H Clark found on the first page, which, on paper, should fit me perfectly. Ended up snagging it for $180 and my parents, in Memphis, picked it up and are bringing it down this weekend when they come to visit. I didn't get to see it in person but dad checked it out and said it looked to be in great shape, so for the price I figured it was worth the gamble.

19” frame and 26” wheels.
New tires and a professional tuneup earlier this year.
Deore rear derailleur, Acera front derailleur.
