Can they be wrong? Sure. Has technology made it much less likely? Sure. Here's a map of all the named storms from 2018. Four of them hit the US mainland (Florence, Alberto, Gordon, and Michael). Below that are the NHC's predictions for each storm DAYS ahead of landfall. Florence Gordon Alberto Michael I'd say they're getting pretty doggone good at reading the steering currents and winds.
