Our new favorite city to visit. We have always loved New Orleans, but the last few times we have been there, there were just too many homeless street urchins and too much whatever... This is our third trip to Savannah and along with Charleston, Natchez, St. Augustine and, believe it or not Philadelphia it is one of our favorite cities to visit. The thing about Savannah is that even though the music scene is not as cool as New Orleans the food is just a good and vibrant, and the History and architecture are better. And I love architecture and design. Anyway, just a few pics from our last trip.. We had a nice hotel room at the Cotton Sail. Vic's on the River was recommended by one of my managers at work and it was great place to eat. We had crawfish beignets, a romaine heart salad and the best crab cakes we have ever had... The next night we went to Corleone’s and had an Italian dinner with Zuppa Toscana, a chopped chicken salad and pasta and meatballs... One day for lunch we ate at a place called Green Fire Pizza and they had wood fired pizza so we figured that ordering a Pizza margarita would be the way to go to see how they cooked pizza... They didn't disappoint. The next night we went to a place called Churchill's to get some fish and chips, but ended up ordering burgers because they sounded so good. I got the fried pimento cheese burger and Mrs. Irish got the bacon cheese burger. This morning with my honey we had some of the best beignets we have ever had, and that includes Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. These were not too sweet, but they had a pecan praline sauce and were outstanding. These were at Huey's on River Street. I was going to order the Eggs Benedict, but my honey watned to order them so I ordered an omelette with Swiss cheese, spinach, and fresh tomatoes, and both dishes were fantastic...

Was there a couple years ago, stayed at the River Street Inn. Cool town. See you found Huey's , mighty fine breakfast ! If you've never done it , go on the Ghost Walk / Ghost Talk walking tour.

And yes, there are very few places that we are impressed by the food. Looks like y’all had a great time as well as great food. Yes we did. We love it there. We do too. Nice people and a great city. Lots of history and it's just fun walking around, hitting the various pubs, coffee shops, book stores, people watching and checking out the historical houses and architecture.

I've lived here 6 years and avoid the tourist areas of Savannah like the plague. Don't think there aren't plenty of homeless and crime in Savannah. They just do a better job of not letting them off the leash around the tourist. Just like New Orleans, you go one block the wrong direction and you could see everything from junkies and dealers to bullets flying.
There are a bunch of good restaurants but the best ones aren't the tourist traps like The Old Pink House or Mrs Wilkes. For really good food from Seafood to Burgers it's hard to beat Crystal Beer Palace. I ate there today because I had to be in Savannah. Cotton Exchange is really good, too even though it's on River Street. I haven't tried The Grey but it's been well reviewed since opening. Next time, go over to Pooler off Hwy 80 and there is a place called Randy's Pickin Parlor where they have live Bluegrass music and pretty good food. It's kind of eclectic and different but very popular with locals and tourist.

One of the last times we were there we were staying up late at the City market listening to a band play. We asked one of the rickshaw peddlers to wait for us and she did. About 1300 hours we asked her for a ride home across town. Once on our way we talked to her and found out she was a life long resident. We talked to her about the ghosts and she asked, "Do you want me to show them all to you?" Of course we said yes, so she took us on our own personal Ghost tour at 1300 in the morning, I think we got home to our townhouse at about 1500 in the morning, but what a great night.

If you liked Natchez you should try Vicksburg for the history.
I've been to Vicksburg twice, but it didn't seem as nice as Natchez.

The story of the ghost at the Low house will make you think , even if you're not a believer.

They do a good job of keeping them off River Street and downtown. As long as you don't make a wrong turn after dark your good. A couple blocks over from River Street is as bad as any area of New Orleans.

Great city! We felt safe roaming the squares during the days and walking along the River after dark. Plenty of police along the river at night to keep trouble at bay. Stayed in The River Street Inn, which we highly recommend. The Cotton Exchange on one side and Huey's on the other with one of those bars with the giant daquari machines close by. Like already mentioned, The Cotton Exchange is very good dining. Not too upscale yet still good. Huey's simply can't be beat for breakfast.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Was 16 years old and on River Street when I heard John Belusi has died. My Kennedy moment.. Have you road out of town to the house out on bay where Young Forest Gump did his run? Really cool to drive down that about mile long driveway borderd by huge live oaks
