You do not need a sidearm, esp. in CO., too much xtra weight anyway. I've never had any problems with altitude(up to 7Kft.), but would be good to do some cardio a while before going. Not as bad as some make out. I'm old and fat and get around just fine out there. Just pace yourself. Always hunt your way up, that way if you kill your packing downhill. And probably most important. Stay Hydrated!!! No offense , but 7K feet is a lot different than 10K plus up near the black timber. None taken, I was going to say on his late season hunt I doubt the Elk will be much higher.

Good points above.
I'll add, get used to a calm trigger pull when your heart and lungs are heaving out of your chest. Run gassers at the range and then settle behind your rifle and get used to calming yourself.
Leukotape. Order it from Amazon. If it's 25 dollars a roll, buy it anyway. The second you get a Hotspot, take your boots off and put a strip on. It's 10X better than moleskin.

keep in mind that elk are big tough animals and tend to NOT show any reaction to being shot. Just because the elk didn't hump/jump/spin/drop at the shot does NOT mean you missed. So true. I shot a big 5x5 bull at 15 yards with my bow and watched the arrow bury behind his shoulder. The elk just turned and looked at me for a few seconds, then turned and trotted off like nothing was wrong. It only went maybe 75 yards, jumping over downed trees, and fell over. The arrow made a clean pass through and got both lungs and the heart. I couldn't have made a better shot but was surprised at the lack of reaction. Another 6x5 that I shot just turned and trotted off like nothing was wrong and it piled up within about 100 yards. Post pics, ya can't talk dead elk and not post pics

I only have one on my phone of my daughter sitting inside the antlers of the 5x5 with me behind her, but I'm not one to post pictures.

Nah, I still have a lot to learn. What gives me most of my opportunities is I'm aggressive while chasing them. Elk hunting requires you to adjust on the fly and use different techniques. I live it as my wife says and I'm always trying to learn. YouTube Born and raised Outdoors Corey Jacobson Elknut and more... Just watch, learn, and take things from each one and mesh with my own style. I'd like to call better if I could pick one area of improvement

Good point. The snow will push them down considerably. I'd expect some solid snow by the 4th season. We've been hit hard this year.

Man with the amount of snow I'm guessing you will face a pair of quality snow shoes might be necessary. I'm not sure of your hunting strategy, but I'd try to hunt near the snow line, a bit above, a bit below. But then again I've yet to drop one. I've just wasted a ton of time chasing them and I live here.

When I hunted in NM the last gun hunt it was warm , it got to about 50 in the daytime. Snow had almost all melted , by the end of the week there was almost none anywhere, anything can happen out there. It had been all warm fall and elk were still high. I killed a 6X6 on day two.
