My stepdad has a 77 vette, 97 vette, and currently working on 70 GTO that just had her engine freshly built to a 468 Stroker. As for the vettes there's nothing to really worry about breaking, but now the GTO is another story 😁 We haven't driven her yet, and I'm sure that rear end is gonna give out 🤣🤣🤣

All the old stuff is going to cost more, and you're going to have to work on it. I think about the best bang for the buck right now is the newer Camaro, Mustang, Challengers. Can get them very reasonably priced, with lots of hot rod goodies for them, and can make some serious power. All while being as efficient as possible, and the luxury of today's amenities. I watched some of the Scat Pak Challenger's run down in Gainesville and they are pretty damn quick.
Now that being said, give me a 66 GT350 with a solid lifter 289 that I have to set valve lash on once a week.

This old classics were good-looking but were unreliable. Pretty much all cars were back then. You were lucky if you got beyond 100k miles

They were both pieces of chit. I think the 1976 had about 175hp from the factory. It was pathetic. It was a rattle trap. Pure junk. To me the sweet spot in a Corvette right now are the C6 Vette's. I missed out an a nice white one with the saddle leather interior for $15k a few months ago.. In my opinion they are the best looking Corvettes ever made and with great performance too, and the interiors aren't too shabby either. The C7 Vettte's are hideous. The C5's were too bloated looking. The C4's are junk. As mentioned the C3's were junk too, but at least the early ones with the chrome bumpers front and rear were good looking. The Stingrays ere a good looking bunch, but I've never owned one or driven one so I can't speak to how they drove or handled. The 1957 Vette's were particularly good looking too. If I buy one, which I may do now that the cabin is getting finished, it will be a C6. Preferably a white fastback with a tan interior and a 6 speed manual.

The 77 they own is a fine machine, and it hasn't been stock for years, it has a built 383 stroker now, and they had a 93 (which would be a C4) and it was far from what i would call junk, but opinions are like azzholes 😁

No offense to anyone, but typically Corvette owners are the people you would expect to own Corvettes. Going through a divorce or recently divorced, New Balances, jean shorts with a tucked in Old Navy shirt, braided leather belt and calls his son sport.

But she did use to drive top of the line caddies also, but she purchased her a 06 Trailblazer and that's all she drives now

Anything Pre 72 with a new running gear that includes an LS. I’m one of the last hold outs but nowadays everything we build gets an LS in it. You can pick between a 700R4 and a 4L80 but I’d spen the few extra dollars and get the 4L80. Put a late model rearend with 4 link, you want launch for playing get vertical, you want smother ride and still launch we’ll just Incase, get angled 4 link.
With these changes, reliability just became a none issue. Now you just gotta pick what wrapping you want it all in. My preference 71 Chevrolet Chevelle 1. 68-72 Nova. 70-72 Monte Carlo. 67-72 Chevrolet pickup and I still love the stepsides.
I also like 55-70 wagons just about any of them if you build it and keep the line honest Hard to beat a fat old 900hp sleeper that all your buddies can fit in

The great thing about 1970's muscle/pony cars is that they have tons of character and wonderful styling. The bad thing about them is that performance wise they are crap compared to modern cars. Modern cars go faster, stop better, handle better and are much more comfortable than any car from the 1960's or 70's. There's really no comparison.
Hell... A damn V6 Toyota Camry has damn near 300 horsepower and will smoke most muscle cars from that era and it's a damn family sedan. Look up comparable 0-60 and 1/4 mile times and you will see what I am talking about. It's stunning just how much evolution has taken place in the internal combustion engine and the automobile in general in the last 50 years. Years ago it was unheard of for a vehicle to go 300k miles without several engine overhauls, now it's quite commonplace. . Yep, if the old cars were so great - why do they put newer suspension packages, steering, engines, transmissions,...etc in the old cars, because they are better. Had a badass 67 Mustang (highly modified engine, racing clutch, transmission, driveshaft, and rear-end - Mallory ignition and Tach w/rev limiter set to 8K) - in a straight line I would stack that car against anything factory assuming you could keep it between the lines, keep the U-Joints from breaking, and keep it cool. I raced it many a time on the street, but it handled and stopped for shucks. I wish I still had that car, but in hindsight - I should have invested my money into the handling and braking and saved some money that I spent on the powertrain so it would have been more driveable. If I can find some pictures - I'll post the engine compartment, it was an interesting setup (battery relocated to the trunk - used welding cables for battery cables because of the draw and compression when starting, custom built radiator shroud for flex fan, Unfortunately, I spent more time working on it than driving it; one day it finally got too hot and decided that it had had enough. I basically sold the car for parts and absolutely lost my ass.

Just put a 6.0 in it and get it over with, want to is plenty of reason

That's funny, i did notice that most of the vets down here drive BMWs I drive a 1968 Ford. Yeah I’ve got a new truck. Please note the word “TYPICALLY”. Everyone here knows the guy I meant by that comment. Yeah there’s the Corvette guys that worked their ass off to buy the best Chevrolet made, the guy who never made it back from Vietnam. Yeah those guys are out there. My apologies.
