New backyard critter killer. 17 hmr compact with full size stock Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9 First 3-shot group at 100 and first group at 236 yards. Last group was at 810 last night just before dark and I resorted to “Kentucky elevation” as I didn’t have time to run the #’s on the ballistic app. I think it’s a keeper (at least for a week or two)! CCI 17gr VMax Replaced the trigger spring with a pen spring and the trigger is really impressive for a sub-$300 gun, less than a 2lb pull with little to no creep.

Nice shooting. Couple of points about the hmr. At 200 yards the hmr is traveling at 300 fps less then is needed for the vmax to expand. For me I like to keep shots under 150 for killing but it is fun to target at longer ranges. They are very finicky about ammo so when you find a round that it likes buy all you can from the same lot #.

Thanks for the info but I’m not overly concerned about the expansion or lack thereof on crows and other vermin.

All of gods creatures deserve a humane death, even crows and vermin. I had to do a double take when I read this. You posted this in the other thread about drowning skunks "Get a live trap and cover the sides and top so when they are caught they can't see you pick up the trap (heavy plastic or sheetmetal). Fill a barrel full of water and put the trap in the barrel with the skunks in it. They can't spray and die quickly."

Drowning is quick and unspectacular except in the media.

Lol.
Takes about 20 seconds for them to lose consciousness.
How fast do the deer you shoot take to lose consciousness?

Usually they take about 1 second. Any small critter, like a possum, skunk or cat 😀 will not feel a thing if you pop them in the noggin with a .22. Please take your convoluted logic back to your PETA training group.

I agree with the rest of the critters getting a small caliber bullet in the noggin) People Eating Tasty Animals. Yum.

3 more 3-shot groups at 236 yards corrected for elevation. (Ignore the 3-shots from a Tikka 270)
