My great uncle (grandfathers brother)was a boozer. Work construction all day Monday-Friday, drink it all down over the weekend. Every weekend of his life after discharge from the army.
Was a hell of a mechanic. He frequented the owl in Bessemer on 15th street. He lived straight down 15th about 2 miles from the bar.
Police would pick him up dui once or twice a month. They'd put him to work on the vehicles and release him when done. He probably had well over 150 dui's and public intoxications through his lifetime.
Wasn't a thing anyone in the family could do to stop him. He eventually died of liver failure but was well into his 60's by then. The police and judges were guilty as hell of letting it continue instead of locking him up and throwing away the key.
Thank goodness he never hurt or killed anyone.

I can understand letting someone off with a mistake at one, but two should be the felony.
My grandfather told me how relieved he was when his brother died. He lived 40+ years worrying when his brother would kill someone.
It was a relief that he no longer had to worry about it.

They COULD have picked him up EVERY weekend. 52 times a year. But only did it when they needed work done.

Bud,I'm not being defensive. Just get tired of folks blaming cops for stuff they have no control over. They don't set the bail or decide when they go home or determine sentencing. I have seen guys who spend their time in a shop doing work instead of sitting in the jail. You think cops like dealing with the same thugs over and over and charging them and nothing ever gets done. You fill the jails then inmates sue because they aren't eating steak or living conditions are bad. Then it's an outrage because they are being treated unfair under their definition of unfair. It cost the county money to defend suits so to prevent public outrage or avoid public outcry they let some out. Then they commit another crime and folks wonder why they weren't in jail. It's a revolving door.

You've been in public service long enough to know the guy on the front line will take the brunt of that anger, not the guys in the offices.
