I don't understand the AL Dept of Public Health fish consumption advisory. Weiss lake has a one meal per month restriction on black crappie, blue cat, channel cat, stripe and large mouth bass for PCBs. Down stream at Neely Henry there are no restrictions. Further down at Logan Martin, there are PCB restrictions again. That makes no sense to me. Am I missing something here?

Lot of run off from either manufacturing plants or agricultural. Probably get's diluted downstream within limits set by EPA.

I asked the same question about a year ago. Its the same fish. Its completely possible that a fish could be in all three of those lakes in a months time.

If someone tells me I can probably eat something once a month without it hurting me, I’ll probably just pass

Same here. I'm not that hungry.

It makes you wonder if you should really eat it at all, and they're just saying "once a month" to throw folks a bone.

All of this is thanks to DOW chemical. Back in the day. PCB's. Polychlorinated Biphenyls.

Dont we spray the chemicals they make directly on the food the deer we kill are eating? Dont we spray our pastures with those chemicals? Im pretty sure we already get a pretty good dose of those chemicals every day.

It would be hard to find a deer or cow that hasnt had some 24d or glyphosate in its mouth at some point.

Those aren’t the chemicals they test for.

Yeah but none of those chemicals contain PCBs. It was banned in the late 70s.

I was referring to chemicals that might be found at a dow plant. I understand mercury is mostly what theyre checking for and if you read the warnings they are mostly for children and pregnant women. I dont eat enough fish to even worry about the warnings. If I want a mess of fish, I go catch them and we eat them.

I feel the same way. When I was a kid, we ate a million crappie and break from Weiss. But knowing what we know now, I won't eat another fish from the Coosa. I'm looking for a better alternative in the area, but not much luck. If I could keep my pond from drying out in the summer, I would stick it. But with no steady water feeding it, that's not an option.

This is enough to keep me from eating anything from Weiss or from the Coosa.
