My boy shot a small buck yesterday evening that was quartering towards him. He made a perfect center punch on the right shoulder but the bullet exited a little far back on the left side, hitting some gut. I told him he probably should have waited for a broadside shot but he said he didn’t think he was going to get that chance. (Probably got a little impatient is my guess but...). If the quartering towards you shot is all you’re going to get, where is the ideal placement? Should you cheat over a little towards the front of the shoulder, towards the brisket?

I've only killed a handful of deer quartering toward me, one was a big 7 and a Big 8 (8 pictured above) and only one of them i dead centered the chest, and he went down and got back up, and died in some of nastiest crap he could've. After that episode, i always aim more towards the crease of the leg, and every one has rolled over and died within 4 yards. Everyone that i knows that's ran it straight up the chest has had a tough tracking job...
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

Quartering to is my favorite (and preferred shot) and will always take it and encourage my son to take the shot. I aim for where the neck & shoulder join. I figure it is up to the deer to determine where they want the bullet to exit. Seriously, depending on the height above and distance from the deer and the angle, I get exits/paths anywhere from the front of the rib cage to the offside hip. Sometimes it gets in the guts, but I have never not had a dead deer either right there or a very short distance away. This one was quartering towards my son and the bullet wound up just in front of the left hindquarter ... deer was dead right there. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/5MybSu9.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/mtsV6pg.jpg)

I once made a perfectly clean gut shot on a doe with my bow, quartering toward me. Of course, we never found her. Made me sick.

Skullworks’ picture is kind of what I was thinking.

I try to put the bullet through where the front legs and spine meet. it depends on how close the deer is.

I would aim a little higher and slightly left of the aiming point in Skullworks picture.

Not me. Think of the vitals as a basket ball in the deer's chest, ya wanta put that bullet or arra through the center of the ball.

I always shoot to the back of the front leg opposite side. Never fails. Just like the picture posted above. That is the correct shot angle and leaves no guesswork.
