I guess so. It just gets old hearing all the conspiracy theories and other reasons for people not to comply. Hopefully as newer hunters get involved in the sport it will get easier. I never could understand the problem with giving the people responsible for managing the State’s natural resources all the information they could use to better manage that resource. That would be like joining a hunting club and telling the club leadership that you will not be complying with their policy of pulling jawbones, recording weights of kills and turning in observation sheets at the end of the season.....

It gets old hearing chuckle act like he's God's gift to conservation, while insulting half the hunters, and all the landowners, in the state. The best thing he could do, to promote GC, is leave.

I’m pretty good at comprehending chit…….but I’ve yet to really understand how we’re going to use this data to make decisions and it doesn’t seem like anyone is able to explain it in detail. There’s only broad general statements made like that “It’s gonna be used to help make management decisions.” ……How exactly is what I want to know. The closest thing to making any sense that I’ve heard is that after several years of data you will be able to look at a particualy county and see if the number of deer they’re killing is sustainable. Meaning that the numbers will start dropping each year if there aren’t enough deer in the area to sustain the current harvest levels. If numbers remain constant….let’s just say county x kills 1000 deer for the 6-7 years without dropping then there’s obviously a strong enough herd to sustain the current harvest levels year in and year out. Is this correct in how the numbers will be used?

However, taking that approach seems really “reactive” if I’m understanding it right. If you do that then it seems like that by the time the numbers show you that there’s a problem then you’ve waited too late…the population has already gone to chit…..Also, how do we know that the change in less deer being killed is associated with population decline and not a change in hunter attitude. People are killing less does now by choice as an example.

I'd be more willing to support it if someone could explain the details better.....

I wonder what happened to the deer that were turned away by the processor? That's a good example of why info from processors will never provide good harvest numbers. Unless you know the % of deer taken to processors, there will be no way to extrapolate the harvest, and there will be many factors unrelated to hunting that will cause that % to vary year to year.

I would guess that processor info is mainly for compliance proof. I have always suspected that GC was primarily about compliance. If you are gonna have a limit you want to be able to enforce it. GC is the law; everyone might as well comply.

To be honest Clem I don’t know how long it’s been in place but I a sure it’s been awhile. There site shows the numbers all the way back to 2002 so at least that long for sure

There are more processors in the area that was just the one we have always used.

Trying to get back on track with the numbers:

About 15,000 deer reported by midday on Friday. Probably not a ton of folks hunting on T'giving day.

The overall number should skyrocket by Monday night, though, with all the supportive hunters doing the right thing.

Where were we this time last year? Who had the spreadsheet? Can we get that stickied?

Have no clue about previous years. They're not available, far as I can tell, on the DCNR site to be able to cross-check and look back for comparison.

A processor should not be able to take a deer without a confermation number. I really don't understand why people can't just abide by the law. The same people that don't follow ever which hunting law they don't like are the very people who bitch about other folks breaking some other law that I guess they don't agree with. Like the pot calling the kettle black.

So you're good with the state mandating to businesses they have to become an agent for them and help them?

We have a system in place. We don't need more regulations mandated on anyone, whether personal or business.

We have a system in place that is said to be so easy that anyone can do it. State employees reinforce this along with hunters who say the same. Numerous threads on this site have quotes that say that.

So there is no need for more regulations placed upon hunters or business owners if a system is in place that is easy to use and is being used.

If compliance is a problem then that's an issue for the enforcement staff, not something to be rectified with more regulations or laws.

How do we know it's not being used?? I have yet to find anyone who has gotten a citation over GC.

I say let the State start using the actual numbers it gets with GC to set the limits and seasons. Then I bet people start reporting their kills when the State has no choice but to decrease bag limits due to the low harvest rate equaling a smaller deer herd wink

I agree 100%! Give it another year or two for a good sampling and go with it. They asked for numbers, there they are, use them or quit talking about it.

States "up North" have fees , licenses , permits , tags for everything! They are over governed at every turn, they are used to it and accept it.

My former boss lived in Indiana a while. He didn't live in a town or city, had to get a permit from the county to make simple repairs to the exterior of his garage . He was from Michigan said they were bad but Indiana was worse and he got outa there quick as possible. He loved living in Jackson County Alabama.

I never wanta be like "up North".
