I can’t believe no one has questioned why y’all were splitting pine for firewood.  They must like smoke and soot. That wasn't pine, it was Douglas-fir. Stuff burns pretty good, fast and hot. I also burn some Oregon white oak and some madrone (an evergreen hardwood). My fireplace insert has one of those Oregon mandated catalytic converters, so there is little in the way of smoke and soot once it reaches 500 degrees. Douglas-fir is the dominant tree species in western Oregon, as you can see in this pic out my living room window: ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/J727iem.jpg)
