According to Sykes, legislation would have to be passed to get the processor's numbers. I have personally asked him that and that was his response. He said it would never happen due to processor's against providing the info of the number of deer they handle. Back in the 80's & 90's, doe season was a week or less between Christmas & New Years. If you had a club with a state biologist input, they checked your property and could issue additional doe tags. We always saw deer on each hunt. We had some rules setup that helped our herd grow in our little parcel of land (2500 acres). Due to our rut starting in early January, we made sure our doe tags were filled by 12/31. We had one other rule and that was if you kill a buck, you had to mount it or pay $250.00 This kept the brown it's down members in check. By year 5, our does were averaging 120-125 lbs. and it wasn't uncommon to have anywhere from 10-15 rack bucks harvested each season. I won't name the club but it wasn't far from the paper mill off of Van Degger Hwy near Grove Hill. As the quality of hunting went up, so did the dues. Some on here might know this club and I hope they're still having the success we had back then. I just can't justify $3000.00+ for dues a year.

I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

I agree. Most of us have good relationships and interactions with game wardens and state biologists. If somebody that was more representative of the common man had presented game check in a different way, folks may have jumped on board. I’ll never forget that condescending email he sent me when I inquired about the CAB taking daya away from turkey season.

On average how many interactions do you have with a local warden per week?

Ha! I can always count on you to defend your Ol buddy Chuck. On average how many interactions do you have with Chuck per day? Is he coming over for Thanksgiving?

To answer your question I interact with Nighthunter and Matt Brock on a weekly basis right here on Aldeer. I see and talk to Chas Moore several times a year here in Shelby County. I’m not sure what that has to do with my opinion of Chuck.

Why don’t you guys utilize the state biologist more? You realize they will help you set management goals for your property if you can provide them enough data. I’ve had Matt out several times and we text each other on a somewhat regular basis. A lot of times it’s me texting him to pick his brain about something.

My views on the DCNR as a whole have changed after my experience with these guys. I still don’t believe everything they put out but they have some very knowledgeable people working for them.

With their help we have completely turned a piece of property around that was literally shot to pieces. If more people utilized the FREE services it just might change things for the better

As of 6 p.m. Thanksgiving night:

14,240 deer checked in since Oct. 15

8,603 does and 5,924 bucks

Three of the deer checked in were killed on state parks. What Alabama state park land allows deer hunting?

I just got back from a state where tagging is mandatory and guess what I didn’t hear anyone complaining. They also make the deer processors write down each tag number as they were brought in and guess what no complaints and it evidently didn’t hurt business because after three days of gun season the processor was completely full and couldn’t accept anymore deer. Sometimes it just seems that the average Alabama hunter just enjoys rebelling against the system.....

BigT, in the state you hunted how long has its mandatory check system been in place and how long have the processors been mandated to take a hunter number?

I guess so. It just gets old hearing all the conspiracy theories and other reasons for people not to comply. Hopefully as newer hunters get involved in the sport it will get easier. I never could understand the problem with giving the people responsible for managing the State’s natural resources all the information they could use to better manage that resource. That would be like joining a hunting club and telling the club leadership that you will not be complying with their policy of pulling jawbones, recording weights of kills and turning in observation sheets at the end of the season.....

Yes that's it. The club was off of Springhill Baptist church road, or at least that's what we called it. The area had great genetics.

According to C Sykes legislation has to be passed to get the processors to gather the needed info. I don't know if that's true or not but he did say the processors in AL were against it. Go figure...

Did that state have liberal doe rape days? Could you kill a doe a day everyday of the season? That’s what’s killing bama in my opinion. And we had way more deer in the state in the late 90s early 2000s.

They have a set number of doe tags that can be bought over the counter for the entire season until all those tags are purchased. I agree with you that the liberal doe days have not been good for the entire State. In my area I think it had been particularly bad for the hunting and this is one reason I am for giving the people charged with managing the resource all the information they can get to make more educated decisions.

How long has your mystery state's mandated check system been in place, BigT?
