Northern Winston which is north of Double Springs I agree with Dec.1st. for peak rutting. South of Double Springs is a little later is my opinion.
It is hard to kill or catch anything sitting on the couch!

In my DCNR book from 1979 it shows Bankhead in Winston Co. as "date of peak breeding" as Dec. 1. Does that still hold true about 40 years later? Pretty much. We collect does from Lawrence and Winston counties in the WMA and the general forest. Dates range from early November until January, with most of them falling between Nov. 15 - Dec 1. Those occasional late December to early January dates is what pushes the average into December. If you take those outliers away the majority of breeding takes place around Thanksgiving. Once you get to DS the majority of breeding is from Dec 15- 31.
