I finally got an axe I’ve been wanting for a long time and I’m pretty sure it’s about the best splitting axe money can buy. A little back story. About 10 or 12 years ago when i was in my early 20s and full of piss and vinegar, we were at the hunting club about to split some 30” diameter pine logs to make firewood. I grabbed an 8lb maul and the club president who was about 45 at the time grabbed this little fiskars axe out of the back of his truck (one size smaller than the one i just bought) and asked if i thought i could split wood with that maul faster than he could with his new fiskars axe. I said hell yeah, that little toy couldn’t split one of these logs if Paul Bunyan was swinging it. Well, let’s just say, about 15 minutes later i was wore out and embarrassed. He split twice the amount of wood that i did and wasn’t near as tired. Since then I’ve been wanting one and on Halloween i said dammit, today is the day. I busted a little wood with it as soon as i got home and although almost $70 was a little steep for an axe, i was wishing i had bought one sooner. [Linked Image][Linked Image][Linked Image]

Get it. You’ll be impressed. Just make sure you get the splitter, they have a splitting axe and a chopping axe and they sell them right beside each other.

Has anybody checked out those hand forged axes at Marks Outdoors in Hoover? Pricey but sweet looking. Good for a 20% testosterone bump after purchasing.

I wish we had a wood-burning fireplace. I've always loved chopping wood. Stacking sucks but I don't mind chopping.

That's was my sole source of heat for 4 winters until moving in '14. Oil was other option and waayyyy too expensive. Im totally satisfied that im not splitting wood every year. I was stocking 5 cords per year so, that was enough for me.

If they are made by Gransfors Bruk, they are worth every penny.

There has not been a really good USA made axe since the 60's, unless you count custom makers. I have reclaimed over 20 that were older than that, from barns, yard sales, and such.

I like gas and a fireplace,so I can bust as much as I want, not as much as I have to.

Did you buy the X27 36" long Super Splitting axe?

I'd like to pick me one up this week.

Where did you buy yours?

Respectfully, compare a modern Council to one from the 1930's or a Gransfors and see the difference.

I would be interested to hear your opinion.

I own 20+ axes of all vintages, and my Gransfors is in my truck everywhere that I go.

I got a Gransfor Bruk and it is the best ax I have ever owned. It was expensive though, and my mother got it for me as a Christmas gift about 10 years ago.

When I was a student at AU, we went to the International Poultry Expo in Atlanta every year. There was a sharpener company there and their demo each year was a guy shaving his beard off, down to clean slick shaved, with an axe that they sharpened on their equipment. I don't remember what sort of axe it was, but it wasn't your run of the mill Ace Hardware axe. This guy only shaved once a year, each year at the Poultry Expo.

It was prolly a GransforBruk, between them and some of the Japanese old school Samurai sword-smiths they make the best steel on the planet for edged tools.
