Had a friend shoot a Grim Reaper from a crossbow into a deer at 20 yards the first week of season. The deer ran after the shot like he was on a death run and should have dropped in sight. Jerry knew the deer was mortally wounded and got down to retrieve the arrow and find the deer. Arrow was stuck in the dirt and it never opened up-just like you are saying above. He swore he made a perfect shot and was unable to find the deer. Good blood trail for about 30 yards and then it started to peter out. Blood finally quit and the deer was lost. People told him that mechanical broadheads would not open when shot through a crossbow????? I never heard this before, but with the fast bows being used today, it might just happen. Glad you found the deer.

Glad you found the deer. Teach this thread was a joke. I was just having some fun with the mechanical haters that claim expandables don't open. The broadhead did infact open. It is not uncommon to find the blades shut once they exit the body or target. It is simple to understand. The arrow stops suddenly, but the momentum makes the blades slam shut because they are on a hinge.

Now come on, you know that head didn't open. That large hole was just caused by a hydrostatic shock wave effect because she was at such close range.  Congrats on the deer. I still haven't found a way to get a Reaper to fail yet either. I tried tying one closed with dental floss once and it still opened when I shot it into my target.

Grim Reapers are good heads, I have killed both turkey and hogs with them. My wife killed several doe with them as well.
But, I don't think any expandable should be used by any hunter with a low or marginal KE. My wife switched last year to a 125 gr Muzzy and has had great success. She gets pass thrus now every time.
Here is my simple rule and I think it is accurate.
If penetration is of concern, fixed over expandable and the fewer blades the better.

I killed deer for 20 years using the Bear Razorhead 145 grained broadhead, and I only switched because all my friends called me "old fashioned". Peer pressure got the best of me. I still have over 20 packes of the old Razorheads that have never been opened. They'll be worth something one day!

I think mine are actually blue in color and have the insertable bleeder blade. I never used the bleeder blade, just the head itself. I have no idea how many deer I killed with those heads and I only lost one deer using them. I shot them out of Oneida Eagle bows. That was a wicked combination to say the least! Talk about passthroughs-always! That combo would shoot through bone and never even think about it.
