Nope. I know everybody says it can't give you the flu. I don't care and that might be true. I ain't getting one. Only 2 times I actually had the flu I had the shot. I have had the shot and not had the flu. I've not had the shot and not had the flu. I'll take my chances.

Yes, always get one....like said above, it's no guarantee that you won't still get it (which is why getting the flu after getting the shot does NOT mean you got it from the shot), but doesn't hurt.
Now that our daughter takes a medication that can potentially weaken her immune system, and deals with an illness that can be exacerbated by viruses like the flu, cold, strep, etc, getting the flu shot in our family is now not even optional.
In this day & age, when you can get them stupid-cheap (often free with most insurance), you're out of your mind if you don't get one. Even if it only reduces your chances of getting it by 10-20%, it's still worth it.

I have been taking the shot every year since I started teaching in 1982. Only got it once, in a year when they really messed up on the strain prediction. I would rather use sick days for hunting. I am going to shift into Biology Teacher mode here (wah wah wah wa waaah): The shots they use today are made with fragments of the virus. This will not give you the flu, but it will trigger an immune response that may make you feel like chit for a couple of days. That's a good sign that you have a strong immune system that is going into warp speed to protect you. When you get past 65 and your body is slowing down, they will give you a stronger shot just to get the same response. It takes about 2 weeks for you to be protected. If you wait until everybody around you is sick, you may get the flu before the shot kicks in. If they failed in the strain prediction, you may still get the flu. And yes, they do give the shots at the time of year that flu appears, because that's when you need it. The immunity doesn't last forever--if they gave them out in May or June, the immunity would be too low by the end of flu season.

for the medical folks. Seems like i heard a few years ago on the news, that the live virus is given to children. In an inhaler or something (not the shot) is that true?
Several years ago, I was doing some work at a dr's office across from the medical center in dothan. One day it was packed and busy all day. I asked what was up, they said giving out flu vaccine. About 2 weeks later. They was packed again. I asked "flu vaccine again? they said "naw, its the flu"
just seems awfully coincidental that you dont hear nothing about the flu till they start passing out the vaccines.
The injection is a dead virus. The inhalation Is an attenuated virus (live.) It’s virtually harmless virus that provides you the ability to develop antibodies necessary for immunity for that specific virus. This Also there is a specific time of the year for the flu. You here the shot coming out then people getting the flu just because its that time of the year. We try to get the vaccination out in time to provide immunity. It takes up to two weeks for your body to process and develop an immunity to it so if you actually do develop the flu after the vaccination shortly after it was already in your system. YOU DID NOT GET THE FLU FROM THE SHOT. There has already been one death of a child this year from the flu.

Never took them , never had the flu far as I know. Mrs. says I'm getting one this year no questions. She's a retired ADPH nurse who is nanny for our 4 month old grandson, so I guess I'll have to cooperate to keep peace. Can't have little feller getting the flu.

For those that say it is mandatory do you work in the medical field? I worked in a hospital a few years back and it was strongly encouraged and they hounded those that didn’t get one until they did. There were still a couple of nurses that never did. I don’t think they ever fired them.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I get the shot. It’s free and I quite wearing those Roddy Piper shades so I don’t see ugly aliens and don’t have to worry about subliminal messaging experiments anymore.

For the nay sayers and billy's that say there not getting one because they don't need it and will take there chances.
I suggest manning up and taking it if your around youngins or sick older adults.
If the flu makes you feel like death, think about what it does to them.

This is the most contrarian, know it all bunch of folks I've ever seen. I'm 71 and I'm getting the shot, it's free. I've been getting it for several years and the one year I didn't, I got the flu and thought I was going to die and missed hunting 2 weeks of the rut. I was searching for the words, Ron....you said it!

There were still a couple of nurses that never did. I don’t think they ever fired them. They cant fire you they just strongly suggest it and make you sign a waver if you don't get it. I have worked for places that, if you didn't get the shot and got the flu, wouldn't pay you for your sick leave. It was unexcused.
